Final book of HDM trilogy
Although this is listed as Book 3 on the website, it’s listed as Part 2 in my library, which is confusing. It is also confusing that the three audiobooks featuring Philip Pullman are not grouped together on the website, as there are other audiobooks. I had to search with care to ensure I bought the correct book: It’s the Audible series. It is an expensive way to buy the books, as you have to buy all 3 (Northern Lights, Subtle Knife, and this one.). However, it is brilliant, with fully voiced characters and Philip Pullman reading his own work. He is an excellent narrator and brings everytthing to life.
The story in this final book is as dark as it gets for children’s literature. It reminded me of Beauty, by Sheri S Tepper, which, like TDM, begins with a story about an engaging female character, but ends up in the world of the dead, with detailed descriptions of pain and sorrow which I found hard to hear/read.
Not just for kids
This book is suitable for children, however Phillip Pullman has created a story that is just as entertaining for all ages - fantastic - read it... And listen to it too as it is a different experience.
