An intriguing start to the series.

There’s some fun world-building elements here. I hope later books continue to explore the history of the world and it’s people hinted at in this book.
At times I felt a little short-changed in terms of detail. A few tropes here and there (particularly in the form of one gruff mercenary captain) felt a little on the nose.
But exotic takes on fantasy races, a few magic systems (albeit only vaguely described) and an overall fluidly written plot kept me on the hook. I’m not sure I’m that invested in any of the protagonists particularly. However, Cithrin and Geder have both proved compelling enough in their own ways, insofar as each explore the most interesting elements of their world (the geopolitical implications of banking, and the secrets of the world’s shrouded history respectively).
