Capturing the intensity of a Jack Reacher novel might prove a task too tall for many narrators. Fortunately, Jeff Harding is one the very best. He’s also given truly riveting material here, in Lee Child’s tenth Reacher thriller. We reengage with our brooding hero in New York where a chance encounter at a café gets him out of a funk and into one of the most conflicting cases of his career. Can he trust the seemingly sinister man who’s charged him with tracking down his kidnapped daughter and second wife? Should alarm bells be ringing after Reacher discovers his first wife died after her own kidnapping ordeal? It all leads to a barnstorming climax in a quiet English village that ranks as one of the series’ best ever.

Research?
I’m used to reading novels by American authors but I was astounded at how patronising and superior this one sounded when describing anything about England. All of our doors are different, apparently. And when stacking to land at LHR, you can see each and every landmark including individual hotels in the city. Our roads are too well signposted and you can see people coming for miles in East Anglia because it’s flat. Country pubs are crowded with more than 3 people in and cost £40 a night to stay in, including full English breakfast. I cringed a lot.
