This special second edition of Kate Morton's acclaimed debut, The House at Riverton, which went on to sell millions of copies across the globe, is read by award-winning audiobook narrator and actress Emilia Fox.
Summer 1924: on the night of a glittering society party by the lake of a grand English country house, a young poet takes his life. The only witnesses are sisters Hannah and Emmeline Hartford, and they will never speak to each other again.
Winter 1999: Grace Bradley, 98, one-time housemaid of Riverton Manor, is visited by a young director making a film about the poet’s suicide. Ghosts awaken and memories, long consigned to the dark reaches of Grace’s mind, begin to sneak back through the cracks. A shocking secret threatens to emerge – something history has forgotten but Grace never could.
Set as the Edwardian summer finally surrenders to the decadent twenties, The House at Riverton is a multi-million-copy bestselling novel and one of the most successful debuts of all time.

Power through!
Slow going, overloaded with description but delightfully worth the wait. I felt part of the protagonists life by the end as if she were my grandma. You need to power through to get that warm cozy feeling but it’s worth it.

*Secrets & Intrigue*
This is Kate Morton’s debut novel and having read ‘The Secret Keeper’ which I loved, I was interested to see what it was like. The book did not flow as well for me but it grabbed my attention towards the later half. I can see how Kate Morton has grown as a writer.
I added the audio and Emilia Fox’s narration really added to the book. It is a story mainly about the Hartford Sisters, Hannah & Emmeline. It is told through the eyes of Grace who was a former housemaid in the 1920’s at the house and was particularly close to Hannah and to the present where she is 98 years old in 1999.
A lot went on in the house and Grace was privy to it all. Some of the goings on Grace would rather keep locked away. Grace is now in a care home and is approached by a young director as she is making a film about the goings on behind the scenes. The director is particularly interested in the life of a poet known to both sisters. He was also part of a terrible incident at the house which led to the sisters never communicating again.
Grace takes us back and forth but I found it a little slow. The characters came to life with Emilia’s narration.
This novel was a very ambitious debut trying to piece together a lot of detail.
