Publisher Description

Alexis Fielding longs to find out about her mother's past, but Sofia has never spoken of it. She only admits to growing up in a small Cretan village before moving to London. When Alexis decides to visit Crete, however, Sofia gives her daughter a letter to take to an old friend and promises that, through her, she will learn more.

Arriving in Plaka, Alexis learns that it lies a stone's throw from the deserted island of Spinalonga - Greece's former leper colony. She finds her mother's friend, Fortini, and hears the story that Sofia has buried all her life: the tale of her great-grandmother, Eleni, and her daughters, and a family rent by tragedy, war and passion. And she discovers how secrecy holds them all in its powerful grip.

The island

I originally bought this audiobook as a box cd from Woolworths when they closed for 50p because it was cheap but it has to be the most touching book I have ever read or listened to. It's not romantic and draws you into a world of prejudice and a culture that is different but compelling.

The island

I listened to this story mostly on my balcony while on holiday in Kefalonia, there was a very small island off to the right and every morning a little sail boat went by, I imagined it was Spina Longa and the little boat was going there. I loved this audio book and look forward to more from this author .

Ruined

I love this story ( I have read it multiple times) but the narrator sounds board and does nothing to bring the story or the characters alive!
