Not what you’d expect
It’s worth noting that this isn’t a usual audiobook format. It’s more of a podcast in its nature. Chapters of the book are interspersed by Peters own commentary and untold stories. This can be slightly jarring however it fits with the flow of the original book, a timeline in which events are expanded upon with stories.
There’s a lot of content in here for the avid Peter Kay fan and some interesting insight into both the books creation (if you care about that) and untold anecdotes or extensions of stories within the book. It can be confusing as it is admittedly quite rambly but if you can get past that there’s many truly funny moments.
I’ve heard it said that Peter reads in quite a monotone voice. I’d say that’s not true, he speaks no differently to his standup and acting roles, to how you’d imagine his voice while reading the book. The speaking voice is consistent with the voice of the book. Is it overly dramatic like Andy Serkis reading the hobbit? No. Is this a drama? Also no.
If you enjoy Peter Kay’s work and are interested in listening to the book that never wanted to be written, I’d highly recommend the experience
Very funny
Whilst it is true he does ramble & go away from the book, this audiobook is incredibly funny! Definitely worth the listen.
