The Stars Look Down
I was absolutely gripped by this book. What a brilliantly well written and moving saga; it really gave me an insight into the conditions of the working classes in general and the miners in particular in the early nineteen hundreds. It is not a book I would read for myself, but listening to it as an audio book was easy. The narrator was wonderful - he really brought it life for me and he did the Geordie accents so well! It's enough to make anyone become an ardent supporter of the Labour party.
A good tale well written and read.
It's a bit of a saga but it is very well written and excellently read.
We follow the lives in and around a mining community leading up to WW1. A J Cronin writes with without sentimentality but conveys the story with emotion.
At over 30 hrs and at 95p this is a bargain audiobook.
