Publisher Description

George Ward Nichols was born in Tremont, Maine, on 21st June, 1831. He worked as a journalist until the outbreak of the American Civil War and then joined the Union Army. He served under General William Sherman and rose to the rank of lieutenant colonel. He published
The Story of the Great March, essentially a journal he kept during that march in 1865 and it became an immediate best seller.

In it he describes his experiences during Sherman's March to the Sea and then through the Carolinas. The book is very well written for a joural and provides fascinating details of that march that couldonly be written by one who was there. In addition to describing the march itself, Nichols also interviewed many people along the way and tells about their conditions and their opinions. As a Union soldier, he makes no attempt to be objective, but once this is taken into account, his details and observations form a fascinating story.
