Publisher Description

THE GRIPPING DEBUT THRILLER FROM THE UK'S TOP POLITICAL JOURNALIST, ROBERT PESTON.

1997. A desperate government clings to power; a hungry opposition will do anything to win. And journalist Gil Peck watches from the sidelines, a respected commentator on the sport of power politics. He thinks he knows how things work. He thinks he knows the rules.

But when Gil's estranged sister Clare dies in a hit-and-run, he begins to believe it was no accident. Clare knew some of the most sensitive secrets in government. One of them might have got her killed.

As election day approaches, Gil follows the story into the dark web of interests that link politics, finance and the media. And the deeper he goes, the more he realises how wrong he has been.

Power isn't sport: it's war. And if Gil doesn't stop digging, he might be the next casualty.

*Secrets and Lies*

This is a Fictional political thriller written by none other than Robert Peston - ITV’s political editor. In his many years working within this field I think makes him qualified to write about it.

Well it starts off intriguing mainly because you are given an insight into the ins and outs of a reporter and the complexities of how politics work. We also see that the hunger for a story means working unsociable hours and what drives them to do whatever it takes for a story.

As election day is fast approaching the current government is trying its best to hang onto power and the opposition is clipping at their heels to force them out.

Gil Peck an experienced journalist watches and waits for a story. His sister Clare works within the treasury and knows far too many secrets. She takes no prisoners and stands up to bullies. Sadly Gil and Clare have fallen out over a story he wrote but he still admires her from afar.

Things quickly change when a huge personal loss happens in connection with Gil and he feels he can smell a rat.

The pace of the book ramps up more towards the latter half of the book and then it holds my attention. So many twists and turns for Gil as he digs into the reasons behind the loss and he starts to wonder which way to turn and who he can trust. There are times when he feels he is on the way to getting an answer then another twist happens Gil will need to think outside the box….
