Imagine you could travel back to the 14th century. What would you see? What would you smell? More to the point, where are you going to stay? And what are you going to eat?
Ian Mortimer shows us that the past is not just something to be studied; it is also something to be lived. He sets out to explain what life was like in the most immediate way, through taking you to the Middle Ages.
The result is the most astonishing social history book you are ever likely to read: evolutionary in its concept, informative and entertaining in its detail, and startling for its portrayal of humanity in an age of violence, exuberance and fear.

One of the best history books I've ever read/listened to. A wealth of fascinating information presented in an easy to digest format bringing the 1300's to life. Has given me a much better understanding of the people of the age and removed some of the stereotypes. Anyone studying history, not just this period should read this book. I have read other books by Ian including the Perfect King and The Greatest Traitor both of which are excellent pieces of work.
Fantastic journey into medieval life, the narrator really brought the book alive and although I learnt a great deal about this part of history, listening to it was always a joy, with some humourous insights and interesting roleplays! Do buy it, it's the best audiobook I've bought on ITunes.
Well Worth It (and I'm a yorkshireman!)
Not patronising, gets everything over in an easy to understand way without dumbing down. This is NOT a stuffy book nor is it too light hearted. Give it a try, you'll not just enjoy it (especially as a change from your usually fair) you'll learn a bit too. As our 14C friends would say...'fair thee well'.
