Who Goes There?, the novella that formed the basis of the film The Thing, is the John W. Campbell classic about an antarctic research camp that discovers and thaws the ancient body of a crash-landed alien.

Beyond the first 7 minutes, it's perfect.
The book itself is read amazingly, characters are well voiced, the pacing is perfect for the story. The only minor issue is that the first 6-7 minutes of the audiobook are of the reader giving his own ego a bit of a polish, by reciting the history of this version of the story, and his view that it is (unsurprising as he put it together) the best version of the story aside from the novel.
But once you get past (or skip) that, it's pure perfection from start to end.
