'Captivating, potent, incisive, and wise'
- Madeline Miller, author of Circe
'Writers & Lovers made me happy' - Ann Patchett

Casey has ended up back in Massachusetts after a devastating love affair. Her mother has just died and she is knocked sideways by grief and loneliness, moving between the restaurant where she waitresses for the Harvard elite and the rented shed she calls home. Her one constant is the novel she has been writing for six years, but at thirty-one she is in debt and directionless, and feels too old to be that way - it’s strange, not be the youngest kind of adult anymore.

And then, one evening, she meets Silas. He is kind, handsome, interested. But only a few weeks later, Oscar walks into her restaurant, his two boys in tow. He is older, grieving the loss of his wife, and wrapped up in his own creativity. Suddenly Casey finds herself at the point of a love triangle, torn between two very different relationships that promise two very different futures.

Lily King's Writers & Lovers follows Casey in the last days of a long youth, a time when everything - her family, her work, her relationships - comes to a crisis. Hugely moving and impossibly funny, it is a transfixing novel that explores the terrifying and exhilarating leap between the end of one phase of life and the beginning of another. It is a novel about love and creativity, and ultimately it captures the moment when a woman becomes an artist.

Casey is a writer to be, trouble is she has been writing her novel for the last six years.

She is mourning the recent death of her mother and a relationship that floored her and feels stuck. To help tackle her huge debts she works as a waitress by night and by day she starts to tackle her writing. It’s not all plain sailing as she hands over her draft to her agent/editor friend. She makes the necessary changes and starts the arduous task of sending it to different agencies as rejection letters after the other start to come through.

In the meantime there are two different men in the equation. She seems to surround herself with a lot of wannabe writers and her world is full of jealousies and competition.

Outside of this are the different health issues she has and the panic she feels to the detriment of herself until she tackles them head on.

She then has to decide what her priority is and make a change and not just sit on the sidelines.

This was quite a good read but did not completely grab my attention, I enjoyed the writing process more.

So personal so universal

If you like stories which make you feel like you are just there watching it all, pick this one. There is a natural balance between facts, feelings, sadness and humour. And if you know a little about writers worlds, wherever they are, you will cheer for the protagonist like if she were you. Also more than romantic interests there is a genuine exposure of real friendship. It is all made very enjoyable by the way it is read. Not too much acting and not too much reading, just right.
