A Three-Dog Problem, the second book in the series (but which doesn’t require you to have read the first), finds the Queen reflecting on the events of 2016, from the Brexit referendum to Theresa May becoming the British prime minister and Donald Trump’s US election win. That should be quite enough to be getting on with, only one of the Queen’s beloved paintings has mysteriously turned up somewhere it shouldn’t have, and the body of a much-disliked housekeeper has been discovered by the pool at Buckingham Palace. The Queen—along with her brilliant assistant private secretary Rozie—is spurred into action. And if any of that sounds silly, somehow it never is. Instead, A Three Dog Problem is a delightful crime novel to curl up with, absent of gruesome details and chilling discoveries, and filled with twists, wit and richly imagined details about life inside the walls of Buckingham Palace.
