A novel about growing old, losing all your worldly possessions in a suspicious house fire, and everyone you thought you know is not who they seem to be.
Told in the first person throughout, Fredrik Welin, a retired doctor, escapes a house fire with virtually nothing. Trying to rebuild his life, he is suspected of starting the fire himself, something which even he becomes unsure of. Others die, one of the perils of growing old, his long estranged daughter is bought back into the fold. The book ends with his house rebuilt, but many of his long cherished beliefs shattered or lost
