Publisher Description
An emotional, women's fiction stand-alone novel from USA Today Bestselling Author. All We Never Knew is a powerful "must-read" story of one woman's journey of strength.
What if life really begins at 40 because the life you've meticulously built for yourself is no longer possible?
As far as Maren is concerned, life is perfect and it’s just about to get better. On the cusp of her fortieth birthday and with her only child almost grown, it's time to start putting herself and her marriage first. But when the butterflies in her tummy turn out to be morning sickness, Maren’s world is flipped upside down with an unplanned, high risk pregnancy—one she's ashamed to admit is unwanted.
Overnight, everything changes and the ripple effect of the baby she's so unsure of is felt in every corner of her life. Her perfect life slowly disappears. Her teenage daughter looks for attention in the wrong places. Her best friend inexplicably blows up and stops speaking to her. And worse, her once doting husband pulls away when she needs him the most.
Just when she's sure things couldn't possibly be worse, a shocking discovery rocks Maren's world. Faced with a devastating deception, a truth she can no longer ignore, and an impossible choice, can Maren stop her life from completely unraveling? Or is All We Never Knew too much for love to overcome?
APPLE BOOKS REVIEW
In Elena Aitken’s amazing novel, a strong heroine faces down a personal crisis with a realistic mix of emotions that we felt right down to our bones. Maren has a life anybody might envy—a loving husband and almost-grown daughter, a job she loves, and a supportive best friend. But the day after her 40th birthday, Maren gets one heck of a surprise, in the form of a nasty bout of morning sickness. We felt shell-shocked right alongside Maren as the prospect of a later-in-life pregnancy upends all of her plans and sends her closest relationships into a tailspin. Written with incredible empathy, All We Never Knew is a heartbreakingly relatable story of sorrow and resilience. It reminds us that when our world crumbles, we get a chance to build something even better.

A different take on life after forty
I enjoyed reading this book, it certainly provides something to think about. Maren and Davis have been happily married for eighteen years, Maren has never tried to have a successful career, although she is very good at her job; instead she has been a homemaker. They have a daughter, Rylee, who is sixteen; it won’t be long before she goes off to college. It is Maren’s fortieth birthday and she is going to change her life, take that promotion she has been turning down for years. Davis and Sabrina, their best friend since school plan a surprise party for her birthday, even though they both know she hates surprises.
Right after her birthday Maren’s life implodes in just about every way possible! There are many issues that will resonate with readers. You get cross, with all of them, sorry for them, in despair for them as well. It is clear there cannot be a happy ending. However, there is a silver lining, and hope for the future, not the one planned for any of them! Well worth reading for something completely different.
I received an advance copy of this book from the author, and am delighted to write an honest review. All opinions expressed are entirely my own.
