Joan has always loved looking up at the stars, but never thought she would go to space. But when she sees an advert from NASA seeking female astronauts, physics professor Joan realises she’s eligible and applies. Soon she is in Houston preparing for her first flight, part of the United States’ 1980s Space Shuttle programme.
Taylor Jenkins Reid has always done well by picking recent historical periods, from the Golden Age of Hollywood to the 1970s rock scene, and using them as rich and compelling settings. Atmosphere takes a similar tack, but the focus on science and the difficulties faced by women working in male-dominated fields give the book extra gravity.
Joan and her fellow astronauts are believable characters who develop over time. The love that grows between two of them is given space to breathe and feels unforced and authentic.
