Beloved Country

When Caribbean Poets write about their region in any language, they appear to capture a timeless landscape where past, present and future merge. History is personified, becomes a citizen and lives among the people. Mac Donald Dixon is no exception. He has been able to blend people and landscape in a seamless tapestry of words, without evoking sympathy or remorse.
Beloved Country and other poems speaks to the country of his birth, Saint Lucia, a tiny island in the Caribbean Sea, which has be the victim of empires, colonizers, speculators, frauds and of late, opportunists. Dixon travels along a tightrope that begins with challenging Columbus, through to sojourns in European wars, the legacy of want and the triumph of ignobility, ending with the establishment of identity and place.
Dixon is part of a triumvirate of published Saint Lucian contemporary writers, writing in English, whose work appear frequently in periodicals and journals. The other two are Kendel Hippolyte and John Robert Lee. This collection reveals a distinctive matured voice, who has learned to trust the lines and turn them on themselves; a master at his craft after years of struggle and perseverance.
