Disappointing
This is a heartwarming tale about two parents who cannot love the boy their son actually is and spend the whole book mourning who they thought he’d be. The kidnapping plot would actually be engaging if not for the persistent, self-centred mourning over their son’s autism - which they treat as a disease that stole him from them in a depiction of autism that runs contrary to everything I have ever learnt on the subject - and the “happy” ending comes with their son becoming slightly less autistic and therefore slightly less objectionable in their eyes. This book could have been so much better, and it wasn’t. Don’t read it. I’m sure there a much better stories that have much better depictions of autism, maybe from people who have autism themselves and so can give a more nuanced depiction than the dehumanising, alienating one found here.
