About the author
Sunday Times bestselling author Mhairi McFarlane was born in Scotland in 1976 and her unnecessarily confusing name is pronounced Vah-Ree.
After some efforts at journalism, she started writing novels and her first book, You Had Me At Hello, was an instant success. She’s now working on her tenth book and lives in Nottingham.

McFarlane's latest (after Mad About You) is an immensely readable deep dive into the durability of friendships and the slow death of a romantic relationship, rounded out with a love story that feels almost like an afterthought. High school teacher Roisin Walters's 10-year relationship has been fizzling out for some time, but she had no intention to break up with her TV writer boyfriend, Joe, during a weekend getaway with their core friend group. To make matters worse, when the crew sits down to watch Joe's new show together, Roisin is shocked to see their fraught relationship reflected on screen—and in the show, the character based on Joe is unfaithful, leading Roisin to wonder just how much art imitates life. The question of whether Joe's betrayals include infidelity is central to the story, but the larger plot revolves around the current state of a friend group that has become a family, as all are affected by the breakup. A budding attraction between Roisin and her friend Matt brings some feels, but it doesn't arrive until well after the halfway mark and will leave readers looking for a traditional romance somewhat underwhelmed. Still, it's a thoughtful and often enjoyable exploration of human relationships.

Excellent
Clever & witty. Enjoyed immensely
Very difficult to get into
I started reading this once. Couldn’t get into it. So put it down for a few weeks. Tried again. Same story. Such a boring opening that went on for so many pages. So many characters thrown at you from the start that it doesn’t make for light and smooth reading but rather like a boring tale you don’t really need to know. It’s sad because I adore this author and have always found great reading material from her pen.
An amazing read from such a talented author
I was blown away as always by the writing of Mhairi McFarlane. I constantly wish I could come up with her stories and the flow of her writing. I was invested in all the characters and could almost feel what they were through Mhairi’s depictions; from crushing doom heavy chest to ‘honking’ hilarity, these feelings strike a chord with me in every one of her books. I’m sad I’ve finished it and would just like another - soon!
