APPLE BOOKS REVIEW
Bold Lies is a compelling and intense novel by one of Britain’s most interesting crime writers. The fifth book in Rachel Lynch’s DI Kelly Porter series finds the brilliant detective investigating what, at first, appears to be two separate crimes: a dead body found on a boat and the assassination of a scientist. Lynch’s book is a satisfying and detailed police procedural, but what makes it truly captivating is that, unlike many crime novels, the story spends time exploring its crime-fighting protagonist’s personal life and the ways she navigates familial and romantic tensions.
This series, with DI Kelly Porter, is one I’ve enjoyed so much.
The characters’ lives and personalities add plenty to the story and I love the way the author really makes the most of the setting in the Lake District. She doesn’t just mention places, they become part of the plot. The writing style is easy to read too.
Bold Lies was only partly set in the Lakes because of the nature and scale of the investigation but those bits were particularly enjoyable for me. The Keswick area and boating on Derwent Water are so familiar to me.
Mainly because of the size and type of investigation, I suppose it was necessary to tie up loose ends in a final summarising chapter set some months after the main narrative finished.
