Publisher Description
Buddy Holly is the best-known yet most elusive and enigmatic of all Rock 'n' Roll legends. Now Philip Norman, who has won international praise for his biographies of the Beatles, the Rolling Stones and Elton John, has written the definitive story of a short but extraordinary life. Buddy's records are played, and his memory is cherished, the world over. Yet the full story of his meteoric rise and tragic fall has never been told.
Philip Norman uses his unique skills to give a revealing, sometimes shocking but always warmly affectionate portrait of America's mythical Rock 'n' Roll era and its brightest and most enduring star.
'Excellent ... [Norman's] cogency and thoroughness make this biography as welcome as the unstoppably fresh songs his idol left us' Sunday Times

Rave On!
Norman imbues his colourful portrayal of Buddy with an obvious and contagious enthusiasm for the man's music, and sprinkles the narrative with numerous, tantalising anecdotes. After reading the last page, and having thoroughly enjoyed every bit of it, I was left wanting more. The narrative, I felt, had ended too abruptly and too many loose ends had been left untied. Of course, this was not the fault of the author, but of the fateful plane crash that occurred in 1959. Norman, for his part, succeeds in absorbing the reader and transporting them back to the scenes of Buddy's bitterly short but storied life, scenes vividly brought to life by Norman's warm, evocative prose. Now, when I listen to the music of Buddy Holly, I will instantly picture the small studio in Clovis, or the trendy New York apartment which Buddy and his new bride occupied from late 1958 through early 1959. Philip Norman recasts all those two and a half minute gems as windows into the life of the boy from Lubbock.
