Publisher Description

Introduction This essay is the extended text of the 14th Maxwell Ralph Jacobs Memorial Oration delivered at the Institute of Foresters of Australia conference Forestry: A Climate of Change on 7 September 2009 at Caloundra, Queensland. The Oration was delivered just a month short of Max Jacobs' passing 30 years ago on 7 October 1979 and commemorates the immense contribution he made to Australian and international forestry over more than 50 years--more specifically from his graduation in forestry from the Waite Institute of the University of Adelaide in 1925 to his death in 1979. This period in the mid-20th century was arguably the apogee of professional forestry development in Australia, a development to which Max Jacobs contributed in his multiple roles as forester, researcher, teacher, mentor, writer and administrator.
