Tomi Adeyemi conjures a stunning world of dark magic and danger in her West African-inspired fantasy Children of Blood and Bone, the first in the #1 New York Times-bestselling Legacy of Orïsha series.
'A hugely enjoyable escapist story that makes you re-examine the world around you.' – Kiran Millwood Hargrave, author of The Deathless Girls
They killed my mother.
They took our magic.
They tried to bury us.
Now we rise . . .
Zélie remembers when the soil of Orïsha hummed with magic. When different clans ruled – Burners igniting flames, Tiders beckoning waves, and Zélie’s Reaper mother summoning forth souls.
But everything changed the night magic disappeared. Under the orders of a ruthless king, anyone with powers was targeted and killed, leaving Zélie without a mother and her people without hope.
Now Zélie has a chance to bring back magic to her people and strike against the monarchy. With the help of a rogue princess, Zélie must learn to harness her powers and outrun the crown prince, who is hell-bent on eradicating magic for good.
Danger lurks in Orïsha, where strange creatures prowl, and vengeful spirits wait in the waters. Yet the greatest danger may be Zélie herself as she struggles to come to terms with the strength of her magic – and her growing feelings for an enemy . . .
'Three perspectives, complex world-building and superlative characterisation make this a must for fantasy fans.' – Imogen Russell Williams, Metro
The movie of Children of Blood and Bone is in development and soon to be a major motion picture from Paramount Pictures and directed by Gina Prince-Bythewood of The Woman King.
APPLE BOOKS REVIEW
The film version of Tomi Adeyemi’s exhilarating and unique YA fantasy is already in development. A few pages into Children of Blood and Bone and you’ll understand why Hollywood were so keen. Adeyemi introduces us to a dark and beguiling world inspired by West Africa where rival clans, all touched by magic and mystical powers, once roamed. An oppressive ruler crushed the tribes, but a young girl is set to rise up and lead a rebellion. Zélie is a wonderful heroine—at once fearless, vulnerable and funny—and at the heart of everything brilliant about this extraordinary book.
PUBLISHERS WEEKLY
Eleven years ago, King Saran cemented his grip on the throne by banishing magic from Or sha and slaughtering the realm's maji Z lie Adebola's mother included. The maji's descendants dark-skinned, white-haired people called div ners have lived under tyranny ever since, but now there is cause for hope. Thanks to information gleaned from Saran's kindhearted daughter, Amari, 17-year-old Z lie has a chance to restore magic to Or sha and activate a new generation of maji. First, though, Z lie, Amari, and Z lie's brother Tzain must outrun the crown prince, Inan, who is determined to finish what his father started by eradicating magic for good. Book one in the Or sha Legacy trilogy, Adeyemi's devastating debut is a brutal, beautiful tale of revolution, faith, and star-crossed love. By making tangible the power that comes from embracing one's heritage, Adeyemi conjures a story that resonates with magic both literal and figurative while condemning apathy in the face of injustice. Complex characters, colossal stakes, and a kaleidoscopic narrative captivate, and the book's punishing pace catapults readers to a jaw-dropping conclusion that poses as many questions as it answers. Ages 14 up.
Customer Reviews
An absolute tour de force.
Shortly after I finished this book, a friend asked me for an alternative to the usual witchcraft fare; I recommended this for its refreshing narrative, representation, and approach to its themes - she devoured both this and the sequel, just as I did. Alternately made me laugh, chew my nails in anticipation, cry heavily, and smile broadly as the protagonist travels her world and discovers who she truly is. Brings back the magic fulsomely.
Amazing fantasy book
I loved this book, it was emotional, well written and a page-turner. Would recommend!
Sheesh
What a rollercoaster. Absolute page-turner. Extremely gifted author who weaves worlds almost as breathtaking as the magic within them
