California, 1862.

In a remote corner of the young state, Lieutenant George Crook is tasked with keeping an uneasy peace between isolated settlers and the local Native tribes. His soldiers, restless and far from home, already resent their posting in this harsh backcountry.

Then the disappearances begin. Entire villages are found empty. Men vanish without a trace. Something malevolent has awakened—an evil that has long plagued the tribes but now threatens the whole region.

To survive, Crook must set aside mistrust and join forces with a local tribal chief. But as former enemies unite against the darkness, an ominous question remains: Will their alliance save them, or will it lead to a far more terrible fate?
