Fans of Agatha Christie, you’re in for a rare treat. This absorbing novel reads like a contemporary And Then There Were None—for a start, it’s set on an isolated island, where various members of the dysfunctional Darker family have gathered for their grandmother’s 80th (on Halloween, for extra eeriness). With the tide out and the house cut off from the mainland, family members are suddenly being seen off one by one. Narrated by the title character Daisy, it’s a twisty read with a plot that carefully unspools itself before a fairly bombastic big finish that we fancy will spark some serious book club debate.

Daisy Darker, the sheltered, 29-year-old narrator of this tempestuous homage to Agatha Christie's And Then There Were None from bestseller Feeney (Rock Paper Scissors), and her dysfunctional kin—divorced parents, two older sisters, and 15-year-old niece, Trixie—rarely gather thanks to an incident nobody will discuss. Regardless, Daisy's grandmother, Nana, maintains she'll die this year, so the group grudgingly visits Nana's Cornish tidal island estate on her 80th birthday. The mood sours after Nana reads her new will, which bequeaths almost everything to Trixie, but since the island's causeway is accessible only at low tide, everyone must stay put. When Trixie finds Nana dead in the kitchen, most assume it's an accident—never mind the macabre poem on a nearby chalkboard. Then Nana's body vanishes, and someone murders another family member, leaving the trapped survivors distrustful and terrified. Feeney elevates a familiar setup with evocative prose, fully realized characters, and an intimate, insightful first-person narrative. A captivating read
I thoroughly enjoyed reading through this book and it keeps you guessing throughout.
The writing paints a clear image and I wouldn’t want to put the book down.
There was definitely a twist, but I’m not sure how I feel about it. Hence the 4 star review
Tried to persevere but gave up 2/3 in
Started off good but was bored by the storyline and it dragged on far too long. Didn’t finish it as was bored and found my mind wandering
