Publisher Description
The second exciting installment of A Dog and His Girl Mysteries!Cassie's mom, an exemplary officer and model of integrity, is suspended from the force pending an investigation--and won't say why. It's an awkward situation for the police, for the town, for the mayor, and especially for Cassie. Having her mom (who is dealing with her stress by micromanaging her family) home 24/7 is seriously cramping her style. To get her out of their hair, Cassie and Dodge take the case. They've got to clear Chief Sullivan's name, save her reputation, and get her back to work before she drives them all nuts. The girl/dog detective duo has no idea what they are getting into. A "borrowed" police file reveals that Cassie's mom is being accused of negligence in ordering a raid that ended in the death of an officer. Cassie can't believe her mom would make that kind of mistake. But even harder to swallow is that fact that the officer who died was Dodge's first partner and the chief's brother in law...
PUBLISHERS WEEKLY
Mason and Stephens, who have teamed up for several Candy Apple and Princess School titles, debut the A Dog and His Girl Mysteries with a quick-moving whodunit. The narrative unfolds in the alternating voices of 12-year-old Cassie Sullivan and Dodge, her German shepherd sleuthing partner. Retired police dog Dodge is an especially exuberant narrator, his staccato monologue conveying his zest for life, food, and detective work. (As Dodge gobbles up food Cassie drops from the dinner table and listens to her police chief mother describe a new investigation, the dog couldn't be happier: "I had everything I wanted. Burger. Girl. Case. Woof"). The central mystery involves a miserly billionaire who disappears after swimming in treacherous waters; he apparently died intestate, and three shady individuals his housekeeper, the mayor, and his alleged fianc e are squabbling over his estate. Relegated to the background, these characters remain somewhat indistinct, taking the edge off the mystery. Still, Cassie and Dodge's strong personalities, endearing rapport, and investigative skills (Cassie is quite good at playing dumb to get the info she's after) will draw readers into the action. Ages 8 12.
