A powerful exploration of truth.
When you are brought up in a family of strict believers, in a community of them you may have little choice but to toe the line. Even more so when your father is the preacher and a well-known man owing to his televangelism. When you are in this situation but know that you don't hold the same strong beliefs, know that you are somehow different but terribly afraid of what it all means, it is going to take a life-changing experience to show you how the rest of the world live, how they accept. What love really is.
Jimmy's father has ordered him to infiltrate the Satanic Temple, headed by Lucien Perez. Jimmy is convinced he is going to find darkness, devil worship and more besides. What he finds shocks him to the core, it is nothing but openness, caring and love. Then he witnesses the type of love he knows, deep down he wants, and it terrifies him.
Lucien knows that people don't really understand what they do. How they care for one another, create a safe space for people to be who they need to be, who they are. Create a community that is open to all. He is surprised by Jimmy and quickly realises the young man is not giving him the whole truth about why he is there. Over a couple of days they grow impossibly close, so close that it terrifies them both, for different reasons, but also close enough that Lucien is witness to the treatment JImmy gets from his father and that angers him. When Jimmy runs Lucien wants nothing more than to chase, but he's persuaded to be patient and it is Jimmy whose heart-breaking but eye-opening discoveries turn the story around and show us all there are many ways to live, we should not judge, we should always accept.
The series of Divine Temptations is fascinating and absorbing. It gives us glimpses into religious trauma without judgment, shows us how we can all learn to accept ourselves and others and also provides us with a wonderful, powerful love story.
