At the centre of the story is Ben, a man shaped by the turbulence of his childhood in a broken family during wartime Brisbane and an adult life as a widowed, closeted homosexual man.

Ben's journey is unfortunately common and, in later life, he enjoys sexual liberation before ultimately finding love again.

During his life, Ben's journey intersects with several other men who, each on their own path, have found themselves at the same destination.
