Publisher Description

The long-awaited, no-holds-barred memoir from the legendary Aerosmith frontman. Finally, all the lurid tales of debauchery, sex, drugs and rock n' roll are told straight from the horse's lips as The Demon of Screamin' describes his unimaginable highs and unbelievable lows as lead singer of one of the biggest rock bands in the world.

Prolific frontman, rock icon and sex symbol, Steven Tyler is a living legend. With his raw, sharp-edged vocals, musical versatility and unprecedented song writing skills, Tyler has, as lead singer of Aerosmith, sold millions of records and played sell-out concerts to as many as 450,000 people. Now, at last, he tells his own story, taking us on a wild rollercoaster ride through the bust-ups, binges, orgies and good old American excess in the jaw-droppingly honest, in-your-face way that only Tyler can.

Following a fateful meeting with his 'mutant twin' Joe Perry in the summer of 1970, Aerosmith was formed…and the rest, as they say, is rock history. They released their first album in 1973, and by 1976 Aerosmith had gone from being nobodies to massive to off the radar, making history as a multi-platinum, chart-topping band.

But with great success comes great excess. Nicknamed the Toxic Twins for their insatiable appetite for drugs, booze and women, Tyler and Perry got caught up in the glamour of self-destruction - smashing each other up with guitars, having seizures and passing out on stage. By 1980 it seemed that the band and its members were set to implode, but after successful stints in drug rehab, Aerosmith were back on track and better than ever.

But although he may have given up his wicked, wicked ways, Tyler still enjoys talking about the bad old days. He has so many outrageous stories to tell, and he's gonna tell them all. All the uncensored, head-spinning tales of debauchery, sex, booze, transcendence and chemical dependence you will ever want to hear. As raucous, intoxicating and edgy as his music, this is the most outrageous rock n' roll autobiography of all time.

‘Steven Tyler is one of the greats of American music’ Sir Paul McCartney

‘The book is sticky with sex…and drugs…plus he squeezes maximum mileage from obsessive punning and compulsive wordplay.’ Classic Rock

Aerosmith Up Close and Personal ,

Well it's written in English. Just not English as I know it.

I'll be honest. I've really been looking forward to this book coming out. I love reading autobiographies especially ones about the excesses of Rock 'n' Roll so I had high hopes for this.
(see what I did there - "high hopes" - Little play on words - comedy gold I tell you)

I'm 200 pages into the 8/900 odd pages (Big type setting so lots of pages) of the enhanced edition so I thought I'd put down my initial thoughts.

There's a LOT of padding or what I take to be padding. Others of you out there may be inspired by what appears to be a random jumble of nonsensical words (or poetry as I think it's often referred to). Me? It just skip over these sections and look for when the "book" starts again. I'm skipping over too much for a book costing what this book cost.

Maybe it's just who Steve is. Maybe it's the direct result that the years of excess (that I wanted to read about) has had on his thought process but damn it's annoying to read.

Is it the book I was looking forward to? No!
Is it a good book to read. No!
Will I finish it? Yes. Probably.
Would I buy it again? Maybe.

If / When I've finished the book it's got better I'll come back and edit this review. But at the moment . . . .

Well. I finished the book.

It's "alright". That's as good as it's going to get. Are the enhancements worth it? Half a dozen quick time interviews with the man himself. Your call, borderline at best.

My yardstick is, and will continue to be, The Dirt / Motley Crüe's book. This book is not in the same league as The Dirt not by a country mile and yet it should be given the amount of material that MUST be available from over the years.

"Me and Joe had an argument". "I went into rehab (again)". "I got high on (insert various drug group here)". That's it!!!! That's the detail. The tell all. The expose that I'd been waiting for.

This is the literary equivalent of those Aerosmith Best Ofs - there's nothing really new here. Not really but you buy it just in case theres been a subtle mix change to one of the old favourites that you've already got 4 or 5 times already but you're a fan so, for the set, you need it. You'll get the same feeling with this book. Shame really it could have been so much better.
