Publisher Description

Once we had liberated a truck, it had still been slow going until we reached El Segundo Boulevard. The stalled traffic had been much lighter there, and we had been able to drive part of the way by cutting into the parking lots of fast food restaurants, that dotted almost the entire length of the highway. We had followed that to Willmington, and picked up another truck that had seen better days. Getting that truck had not been a problem; there were several used car lots along the road. We had used the parking lots to swing around the worst of the traffic, and that had worked well until we had intersected Compton Boulevard. It was hopelessly packed with stalled traffic. We had left the truck, which had sounded as if it was close to dying anyway, and struck out on foot again. Lana led the way as we cut cross lots through Compton Woodley Airport.
Crossing the dead airfield had been unnerving for both of us. The runways had cracked, and either lifted skyward, or tilted down into the ground. Blackened skeletons of large aircraft dotted the airfield. Most of them were so badly burned that we had been unable to tell what they had been before. I thought a couple of them may have been military aircraft, but as badly twisted as they were it was impossible to be sure.
Luggage, some burned, some untouched, was scattered across the airfield in every direction, and many of the suitcases were burst, with papers and clothing scattered everywhere along with other personal effects. There were bodies there too...

Honest Review

I’ve been reading this book casually on and off for a few weeks now, only just over a third of the way through so far and I thought I’d give a review on how it’s going. First off, the story is interesting enough to continue reading and I am currently enjoying it, but there are so many issues throughout. There are quite a few grammatical or spelling errors that sometimes require you to read things over and over again until it makes sense, this ruins the immersion and can get annoying. Another thing that really hinders the good read is how the author has chosen to display the story. There are multiple different angles going on at once, and so the beginning is super confusing because you’re basically reading a new story every page or two as you get introduced, but even once you think you understand the composition, the stories become more confusing and jumbled because each separate story seems to be randomly slotted in between one another, this just has me questioning who certain characters are. This also has me question why we are hearing their point of view and if we’ve heard about them previously because it’s been so focused on a different point of view for a while. The two main perspectives I’ve been able to follow are Katie’s solo experience and the group with Mike, Candace, Bob and the others. There are names appearing that I have no interest in as they don’t seem to add anything to the book and I can barely remember what happened at the beginning because each separate story is so diverse and different that you can’t really comprehend where everyone is at.

The plot and premise seem interesting and fresh enough to continue reading so I will do, I just wish that it focused on less perspectives or had a more equal balance between each POV. Too many characters involved with each perspective that names become hard to recognise or follow.

[EDIT]: After discovering that this series has ten books in total, I’ve decided I’m not going to continue reading, although I was enjoying the story, I feel like my time could be better spent elsewhere as I can’t commit to something with this many issues.
