It's been almost a year since the beginning of the apocalypse when Cheryl Malone made the long journey from Colorado down to Tucson, Arizona to find her father. Fort San Manuel seems like a safe haven compared to the terrifying world outside, but one evening her sense of peace is shattered when a cacophony of screams rise above the music at a night club inside and the Eaters tumble over the walls like hungry rats.

She escapes in a Black Hawk helicopter but it is deliberately shot down and crashes into the Galiuro Mountains where she and her companions make an awkward alliance with a motorcycle gang led by an old friend. The only thing keeping the motley group together is a quest for survival and a burning desire to stop the organization that spread the infection.
