Publisher Description

Abstract. In 1833, the cholera epidemic arrived in Havana and then spread to the rest of the island of Cuba. The large number of dead deeply affected the country, but it also triggered a strong political debate between Jose Antonio Saco and Ramon de la Sagra. This quarrel took place in the Economic Society of Havana and epitomized the confrontation of two schools of liberal thought based on diverging conceptions of national identity. Sagra explained the origin of the epidemic in terms of the island's natural "inferiority" and pointed out Cuba's need of "guidance" from a colonial power. With an opposite view, Saco underlined the contagious character of the illness and argued that it had been brought to the island from the United States. This explanation aimed at justifying an autonomous government within the Spanish liberal state then being built.
