This delightful travelogue of a young Englishman's journey through the middle east, in 1835 has become a permanent classic. Kinglake braved the plague, and numerous other ills in order to undertake these travels when transportation in the area was still quite difficult and dangerous, so many of his adventures are hair-raising as well as humorous.
