Publisher Description
A dark psychological thriller, perfect for fans of Clare Mackintosh and Lisa Jewell
There are two sides to every story.
But only one is the truth.
A young woman turns up at a police station. She has been kept prisoner in her own home. Abused and tortured, her every move watched, her every thought controlled. Now she's finally escaped.
That's what she says.
But when the police arrive at the address she's given them, her story doesn't seem to add up. Her husband is missing, but his phone and wallet are still in the house.
She says she's the victim, but what if she's not? What if the stories she's telling aren't her stories at all . . .
Customer Reviews
Almost all the characters are female, unusually
A few pages in, I didn’t think I was going to like this book. I soon changed my mind.
The domestic abuse theme is an overused one I think but here I found the two main characters’ stories compelling and I didn’t feel I’d heard it all before, so credit to the author.
There were things about the book that normally spoil a story for me and these were apparent from the beginning The use of the present tense, so intrusive and unnatural in many books, I was largely able to ignore.
Also, I often find books with different chapters written from multiple viewpoints annoyingly confusing or unnecessary but here this was never an issue. The sections narrated by both Clare and Sally are in the first person and are quirkily written and interestingly different. The sections about Sue, their main police contact, are in the third person.
Soon, I was drawn into the story, because it was very readable I think. The early parts were quite slow moving but it became gradually more intriguing. I thought I knew what was happening but in time I wasn’t sure what to think, especially in Clare’s case.
Not a perfect book, but a good read.
