Since serial killer Gretchen Lowell went on the run, following Detective Archie Sheridan’s latest near-fatal encounter with her, the city of Portland has descended into Beauty Killer hysteria. Even fan sites have sprung up online, where admirers of Gretchen can congregate to discuss their heroine.
When a spleen is discovered at a local rest stop, Detective Henry Sobol is at first sceptical it is Gretchen’s work. It is only when he sees the rest stop’s wall –covered in hundreds of tiny red hearts that Henry realises its time to contact Archie . . .
Archie Sheridan has spent the last few month’s in the city’s psychiatric hospital, battling with his addiction to painkillers and his strange obsession with the woman who tortured him.
But soon he, along with the Beauty Killer taskforce and journalist Susan Ward, find themselves investigating a new spate of killings –when bodies start to turn up at local beauty spots, their eye-balls removed. Could this be the work of a copy-cat? Or has Gretchen really returned? One thing is certain, whoever is behind these brutal murders, they will do whatever it takes to get to Archie . . .
Gretchen Lowell strikes again or does she? in bestseller Cain's grisly third thriller to feature the female serial killer who takes sadistic pleasure in taunting Portland, Ore., detective Archie Sheridan (after Sweetheart and Heartsick). A violent attack that leaves body parts in a rest stop bathroom, along with Lowell's signature heart design, persuades Sheridan, a recovering Vicodin addict, to leave rehab and rejoin the hunt for Lowell. As he and newspaper reporter Susan Ward dig deeper, they discover that while the corpses cropping up around town are reminiscent of Lowell's nasty handiwork, they might also point to one of the myriad fan clubs dedicated to the killer, who has become a media sensation since she escaped from prison in Heartsick. Even though readers may wonder how much longer this extended game can play out, Cain delivers her usual blend of organ-ripping, blood-soaked gore and compelling flawed heroes and antiheroes.
Chilling but thrilling!!!
This book is the most chilling but thrilling book I have ever read! Gretchen has you huddled under your duvet like a 10 year old again scared of what could be lurking in the wardrobe!
WARNING DO NOT READ WHEN ALONE, IN THE DARK, OR ABOUT TO SLEEP or all three :0 !!!
This book was just as good as the first one.
It keeps you guessing up to a point, but it has you feeling the fear of Archie too.
I am rating it 5 stars. I feel it deserves this rating.
I discovered Chelsea Cain a few years ago by chance.
I recommend any lover of Crime Fiction to read her books.
