“The plot has many twists and turns, but it is the ending, which I did not see coming at all, that totally defines this book as one of the most riveting that I have read in years.”

Disappointed by this
What started quite well, quickly evolved into a page turner meaning I turned the pages to get past all the repetition in this book. And really, just how many times do I need to be told the main character had long chestnut hair?
Ok
Kept me reading till the end, but sadly felt disappointed in the story. Descriptions of certain things were repetitive in a lot of places.
THIS BOOK SHOULD BE A NOVELETTE BUT WRITER AND EDITOR COLLUDED TO MAKE A POOR READ
This got 2* simply because I finished it and felt I couldn’t give it 1* as I do that for books I can’t finish.
I kept going until the end due to one review that said there was a shocking (or surprising) twist at the end. There wasn’t.
The book is poorly written with every chapter (and at times it felt like every page) littered with references to Lexi’s Cole’s dead sister (that’s not a spoiler as it’s a constant throughout the book as I said).
Lexi Cole’s scar above her eyebrow does some heavy lifting with constant references to it reminding her of her dead sister. It’s either being looked at, hair brushing against it, being touched, tingling, throbbing etc..
Ava Strong’s also uses metaphors and similes wherever they can be squeezed in so that the book seems to be dominated by them. Every author should use such devices but these are clunky and overdone almost every time and jarred with my reading.
Take out the scar and sister references and tone down the overuse of metaphors and similes, which any good editor should have insisted on, and the book would be half the size. But the point is probably that they help pad out the text to make the book a book rather than a novelette.
Not going anywhere near the next books in the series or any other books Ava Strong might have written.
