London 1862. Sue Trinder, orphaned at birth, grows up among petty thieves - fingersmiths - under the rough but loving care of Mrs Sucksby and her 'family'. But from the moment she draws breath, Sue's fate is linked to that of another orphan growing up in a gloomy mansion not too many miles away.

Long, involved read
Sue, an orphaned daughter of a hanged woman, living with a foster mother, and a locksmith/fence who has training in pick pocketing (a fingersmith). Picked by Gentleman, no name given, to become the personal servant to a lady, with the intention of conning the lady.
Maud, a lady, a daughter of a lunatic, an orphan adopted by her uncle. Who has a new personal maid, and also falls in love with Richard Rivers, a gentleman acquaintance of her uncles.
Only all isn’t what it seems.
A story of mixed identity, embezzlement, harsh conditions and murder. Together with eroticism.
Fingersmith
A tale of twists, cruelty and love. All unexpected while steeped in the underworld of London and the Berkshire countryside. The characters are stunning and vivid as they are livid.
One hell of a page turner
Praise for a Sarah Waters, an utterly compelling, beautiful narrative.
