About the author
Rebecca J. Caffery is a queer romance author from Birmingham, UK, whose stories celebrate love, electric chemistry, fierce emotion and found families. She rediscovered her passion for writing in 2017 during a study abroad year in Canada, and she’s been writing one too many enemies-to-lovers tropes since.
Rebecca is best known for her high-octane F1 romances, Pole Position (2024) and First to Finish (2026), where fast cars meet even faster hearts. With hopes to expand her writing repertoire into small-town romances, she continues to craft stories that celebrate queer love in all its intensity and joy.
When she’s not writing, Rebecca can be found devouring queer romance novels, binge-watching romantic dramas and romcoms, or passionately (read screaming at her TV) supporting Arsenal Women’s football team and McLaren Formula One Team.
PUBLISHERS WEEKLY
Toward the start of Caffery's underwhelming return to the world of Formula 1 racing (after Pole Position), driver Johannes "Jo" Muller gets dumped by his secret boyfriend, Jackson Carter, son of the team principal of his biggest competitor. The breakup affects his performance on the racetrack—until he gets some comfort and motivation from his race engineer, Caleb Hughes. Caleb, a PhD student, has sworn off relationships and knows getting involved with the driver is a mistake, but there's no denying their chemistry. When Jo invites Caleb to stay at his penthouse, both face temptation leading to an aborted hookup. After the "horny haze" clears, the men reluctantly agree to keep things professional. Jo sees Caleb as "everything I want but can't have," and Caleb is afraid to put his career at risk despite intense feelings. They grow closer once again as Caleb cares for Jo's injuries after a crash, but a third-act fight about Jackson leaves their relationship in jeopardy both personally and professionally. The racing scenes are exciting, but the bland central romance needs more fuel. Cameos from the heroes of the far zippier Pole Position are some of the highlights. This feels stuck in second gear.
