Europe in the 9th century is a dangerous place, especially for people whose upbringing fails to recognize religious norms. For the young Northman, Hari, being rescued from drowning by Christian nuns is a piece of good fortune—but falling for their prioress, Rosa, leads to perils for which neither of them is prepared. Rosa’s convent guards a sacred relic of inestimable value; one which ruthless men will go to any lengths to obtain. Charged with the relic’s safe-keeping Hari and Rosa begin a journey that changes both of them. Torn between her vows and her hunger for Hari, Rosa finds terrifying hardships in the world away from her cloistered existence. At the same time betrayal, dungeons, and false accusations combine to prevent Hari from returning to home and family.
