For teachers who just don’t have enough time to trawl the net for the best music resources “GarageBand for Schools” is the answer.
This book looks set to become a definitive guide for teachers and students. Bringing together flexibility and fun in easy to follow, step-by-step video tutorials, backed up with sound educational content, “GarageBand for Schools” will engage and motivate students and empower teachers to use iPads in a constructive and creative way. Additionally, teachers who lack confidence in music teaching will be able to develop their own skills and ability in ways that will enable them to incorporate music technology into their own teaching and help their students become better musicians”
Whether you are a Primary, Secondary or SEN teacher, or a parent, everyone will find ways to enhance their lessons and support their children using this book. Written by Phil Heeley and David Ashworth, two of the UK’s leading Music Technology Educators and Consultants, “GarageBand for Schools” takes you step by step through the songwriting process: through the systematic organisation of the sessions, teachers and students learn and hone new skills by learning through doing.
This is a practical, hands-on tool which will inspire and motivate. With teachers’ notes, screenshots and sensible reminders such as ‘save your work regularly!’ this resource takes account of and builds upon students’ own interests and experiences.
The resource includes:
• over 65 minutes of video tutorials.
• Chapters including advice how to structure a song, working with chords, adding layers to a song, editing tracks, developing effective musical contrasts and active listening.
Here are some comments from teachers who have previewed the Guide:
“Clearly laid out and well paced - not too daunting”
“I’m not a music specialist and I love the idea of being able to use this resource to essentially bring an expert into my classroom”
“The videoclips are great - ideal for our kids who like to learn using youtube, for example”
“The curriculum mapping and teachers notes are really useful. This will help me integrate into my music lesson planning - and also to teach using GarageBand effectively.’
“Songwriting is something we don’t do very well. GB for Schools will make such a difference - and also support our work with literacy!”
Finally, from the Foreword by Dick Hallam OBE:
“In the field of song-writing, ‘GarageBand for Schools’ fulfils this role masterfully – removing barriers to the effective use of music technology and making it more accessible and enjoyable.”
Putting the music in 'music technology'
All too often a product like this will overemphasise the music technology at the expense of musical learning. By framing an exploration of GarageBand as part of a songwriting activity, Ashworth and Heeley do a great job of ensuring that pupils will have a genuinely musical experience.
With some excellent teacher resources and an impressive array of video footage, it is easy to see how teachers could make genuinely effective use of this resource in the classroom. Great stuff.
Great for those that have used GarageBand, and newcomers to the programme. Really clear, great curriculum links.
