'The story is fast-paced and impossible to put down, and over the course of the two books I started to think of the characters as new friends. Best read while listening to a nostalgic Spice Girls playlist.' Good Housekeeping

APPLE BOOKS REVIEW
Magic, mystery and girl power are the key ingredients in this allegorical concoction from Juno Dawson. who deftly weaves socio-political issues through the supernatural lore of her debut adult novel. The first instalment of this urban fantasy series set in an alternative northern England picks up the story of five childhood best friends—who are also witches—in the aftermath of a magical civil war that has shattered their lives and strained their tight-knit bonds. They’re pulled back into each other’s orbit under the shadow of a terrifying omen that threatens the end of the world and the capture of a dangerously powerful teenager suspected of being “The Sullied Child” destined to fulfil the ancient prophecy. Friends become foes as battle lines are drawn in a brand new conflict. Acceptance, inclusion, and progress clash against tradition, bigotry and the status quo in the lead up to an epic, magical face off and a sucker-punch final scene that will crank up anticipation levels for the forthcoming sequel.

New favourite :)
I had a fantastic time reading this book. I listened to some parts of the audiobook, as I got it from the library, and the narrator was excellent. I wish we had more books like this one. I know the second book is out (and the third one is coming out relatively soon), but it’s a bit pricey, so I’ll wait until it goes down a bit. I hope Juno Dawson continues to write books like this one. I love fantasy, witches and queer stuff, so this book was written for me!
Different type of witch story
This is a rolling story, fast paced and full of action, I really liked it, lots of things I did not want to happen, but all the best stories have laughter, tears, sorrow and death very sad ending though, I’m traumatised and now need to read the next book😎
