A follow-up to her bestselling short-story collection Love in Colour, her debut novel features a heroine, Kiki, who dispenses a lot of (good) relationship advice but does not do relationships. Until she meets a new guy who’s just transferred to her university and already appears interested in multiple women (the feeling is mutual). Babalola’s loving treatment of time-honoured romance tropes—the fake relationship is a classic for good reason—feels entirely fresh, and her ability to transcribe what it’s like to have chemistry with someone is enough to give you butterflies.
