Richard is forty, married to Lucy, and three years into a silence he has stopped trying to name. He wanted another child. She said no. That was the end of the conversation, and almost the end of everything else.

They take Lucy's friend's daughter, Emily, on holiday with them. She is nineteen. Old enough to have been watching him for years. Old enough to hear the fight through the thin walls. Old enough to sit on the terrace after Lucy has gone to bed and say the one sentence his marriage has no answer for.

The next morning Lucy takes their son on a boat trip. The house is empty. What starts as a mistake becomes a week of closed shutters and stolen hours — and a last night that will not stay a secret.
