Praise for the DIVERGENT series by Veronica Roth:

“The next big thing.” (Rolling Stone)

“If you like Hunger Games & Twilight, then get stoked for DIVERGENT! Trust us on this—this baby is going to blow up BIG! And if you chose to remain factionless, then you’re gonna be one lonely soul.” (PerezHilton.com )

“A taut and shiveringly exciting read! Tris is exactly the sort of unflinching and fierce heroine I love. I couldn’t turn the pages fast enough.” Melissa Marr, bestselling author of Wicked Lovely

“DIVERGENT is a captivating, fascinating book that kept me in constant suspense and was never short on surprises. It will be a long time before I quit thinking about this haunting vision of the future.” James Dashner, author of ‘The Maze Runner’

“Well-written and brilliantly executed, DIVERGENT is a heart-pounding debut that cannot be missed. Tris stands out in her action-packed, thrilling, and emotionally honest journey to determine who she wants to be in a society that demands she conform. A great ending!

After reading Divergent about four months ago, I had completely forgotten what was happening and so it took a while for me to understand what Tris was trying to do. After a while I finally understood and things started to piece together. The ending was a shock and it left me needing to know more, a perfect ending to the book. It was nice to learn more about the different factions and how they played a part in the world. I definitely enjoyed it!

Insurgent wasn’t the book I expected it to be and I would have preferred something a little more act

Thanks to the wonderful new cover releases a few month’s ago I was able to get hold of review copies of the Divergent trilogy which I missed first time round and have had on my list to read for quite a while. I reviewed Divergent the first in the series a few weeks ago and have now read Insurgent the second book.

There are a few different formula’s for writing a trilogy and I was keen to find out how this trilogy was going to be formulated and developed. Divergent was action-packed and set the scene for a thrilling coaster ride of a journey. Starting Insurgent it became apparent that the coaster ride had slowed significantly and that this book was going to be more of a fact-finding mission.

Insurgent whilst having some of the action I really enjoyed from Divergent was far more about familiarising us as readers with the factions we hadn’t met already, with helping us get to know characters especially those characters who don’t play an integral part in the story, and to fill in gaps in knowledge about the world we are in and to provide information.

This is a slower read, there is a lot of movement between factions which at time gets a bit confusing and I had to flick back a few times to remind myself where Flis was as she flitted between factions and groups of factions plotting and planning.

Insurgent is less about physicality and more about intelligence, it’s about making sure we go into the final book Allegiant fully understanding how this world works and who all the players are (at least I’m assuming that’s the case having not yet started reading Allegiant).

I found the relationship between Tris and Four/Tobias got really tiresome during Insurgent, it was probably quite accurate of a relationship of a 16 and 18 year old with the secrets and snarky comments but when they are both so grown up and well grounded in so many other ways it didn’t make sense to be so childish in this respect.

Insurgent wasn’t the book I expected it to be and I would have preferred something a little more action packed and exciting, but it has been a good set up for the final book in the trilogy which I hope will be a corker!

A huge thanks to Veronica Roth and Harper Collins Children’s for the ARC via NetGalley to provide an honest review of this novel.
