INTRODUCTION It is our pleasure to introduce this discussion forum which focuses on experiment research methods. Three of the more well-known approaches of experiment research applied to supply chain concepts are those relating to the bullwhip effect (Sterman 1989; Croson and Donohue 2003, 2006; Wu and Katok 2006), the efficiency of various auction mechanisms and strategies (Cox, Smith and Walker 1988; Elmaghraby 2003, 2005; Engelbrecht-Wiggans and Katok 2006; Yeniyurt, Watson, Carter and Stevens 2011), and the design of coordination contracts between buyers and suppliers (Schweitzer and Cachon 2000; Bolton and Katok 2008; Gavemeni and Xia 2009; Ho, Lim and Cui 2010). However, the use of experiments in the supply chain management arena is only beginning to gain momentum, and we see many opportunities on the horizon for this method to offer exciting new contributions to the field.
