Publisher Description

Dornford Yates is the pseudonym of the English novelist - Cecil William Mercer , whose novels and short stories, including humorous and thrillers , were best-sellers in the period between the First and Second world wars. At the outbreak of the Great War in 1914, Mercer joined the County of London Yeomanry and was commissioned as Second Lieutenant, although his stories continued to appear in the Windsor until March 1915.

The continuation of Yates' early short stories featuring the comic Pleydell clan. They describe the chaotic journey of the young, well-to-do heroes as they cavort across France, and helped to establish Yates' reputation as a master of humorous fiction. The language is beautiful, full of literary allusion and echoes of the classics, Biblical cadences and the slang of the public school. An old-fashioned and immensely entertaining mystery stories set in 1920s England will surely make the reader laugh out loud!
