LOVELY
I did it like this series at first! I didn't get it, I was too young for it, etc. Returning to it after the second book was published was a great choice - prince's gambit is a masterpiece, and it clarifies the world of the first book with both severity and this magnificent tenderness. And oh, kings rising returns on that tenderness tenfold. I have never read a romance like this. There's a dimension to this story that marks it head and shoulders above the majority of mainstream fantasy, IMO, and it's that the tightness of its plotting is matched every step of the way by character dynamics that just sing. Surprise and satisfaction define this book for me - how fresh and how real Damen and Laurent feel, how truly their motivations and actions and relationships tie together. Pacat's skill lies in the fact that even with this intense emotional connection to and understanding of the characters their circumstances are never dull or predictable to the reader.
