PUBLISHERS WEEKLY
Tanamachi (The Second You're Single) charms in this clever romantic suspense novel. True crime podcaster Ella Takeda made her name chronicling the murders of the Canceled Killer, famous for posting three skull emojis on the social media accounts of intended victims. After misidentifying the perpetrator, however, Ella loses her job and is forced to move from Chicago back to her hometown of Lake Sanguis, Wis., where her older brother, Oscar, is the sheriff. But handsome Chicago detective Aaron Russo still wants her help on the Canceled Killer case and follows her to Lake Sanguis. As Ella indulges in an online flirtation with a stunt man named Matteo and reconnects with her brother's best friend, Jude, she also continues to dig into the killings. Then three skulls show up on her socials, indicating that the killer has her in the crosshairs. Dead bodies start piling up in Lake Sanguis, and Ella is forced to wonder if one of the three men in her orbit might be responsible. Ella and her true love interest have powerful chemistry, and Tanamachi does a good job keeping the twists coming. The result is a fun genre mash-up perfect for the beach bag.
