We’re big Mhairi McFarlane fans at Apple Books. Which means our expectations are always sky-high—especially after irresistible bestseller If I Never Met You charmed one and all. Fortunately, there’s an intensity coursing through this tale of barely-shrouded secret love between two best friends that suggests a writer at the peak of her powers. McFarlane scales new emotional terrain here, too. It’s a beautifully romantic novel, but it’s also an exquisitely sad one—she captures the devastation of a life-changing event and the grief of its aftermath with some of her best-ever work. We loved getting to spend time with would-be soulmates Eve and Ed, and their friends Justin and Susie, and we’re positive you will too.

Emotional rollercoaster
I find all of Mhairi McFarlane’s books totally relatable and this one is no exception.
From laugh-out-loud one minute, to crying-in-my-tea the next.
I could not put it down.
5* Emotional and absorbing
I have to admit that I'm a great fan of the author Mhairi McFarlane, Last Night was even better than I expected.
Set in Nottingham, Last Night is about four friends who have established a very close relationship for nearly twenty years. Each friend is witty and a delightful character, the book reads like a romantic comedy full of snappy dialogue.
Then everything changes.
Something unthinkable happens, resulting in secrets becoming exposed with damaging consequences for the friends. More and more information emerges that could tear their long friendship apart.
That’s all I’m going to tell you, you’ll just have to read this for yourself. A very emotional book that I thoroughly recommend.
