Publisher Description
This ebook covers all the sounds used in standard English, using Simplified Standard Sound Symbols (S4) to present them. Four audio clip examples are given for each sound.
S4 is a cut-down version of the International Phonetic Alphabet (IPA). Its target is Pan-English, with the ability to accommodate both standard British and standard American pronunciation.
Using standard pronunciation is like using standard spelling: if you don't use it you won't be understood.
Every student of English as a foreign language needs to master the 47 sounds listed here.
This version is for French speakers.

A pictorial phonetic alphabet in S4
As a teacher of EFL/ESL/ESOL and a reasonably fluent French speaker, I was very impressed by this clever approach to phonetics, combining the best features of the international phonemic system with the UK Initial Teaching Alphabet to make a consistent everyday-appeal system without special marks and characters - except the thorn, which I think should be the theta and delta as in IPA. Otherwise it is a very user-friendly approach and especially for French, with sound-spelling correlations almost as odd as English, it is a real joy to see how proper English as she is spoke can be made accessible to francophones.
